colleen cooley with a poem by poet esther belin

esther’s poem imagines a time post pandemic. she writes…

Covid 19 continues to extract a severe toll on the Navajo nation with over 500 deaths. I was reflecting last night that in my 33 years here I can’t think of another time when the community has lost so many people in such a short period of time. I’ve lost coworkers and friends. Families are hurting as they grieve the sudden loss of loved ones who transitioned to the next world without the touch or presence of family members.

Fortunately, the case positivity rate has declined dramatically. However, we’re still under evening and weekend lockdown as we prepare for the flu season and a 2nd coronavirus wave. Anyone interested in supporting local mutual aid organizations that are providing water, food, firewood and sanitation supplies to families on the reservation impacted by coronavirus please consider donating to:

  1. navajohopisolidarity.org
  2. kinlanimutualaid.org
  3. wearenavajo.org
  4. digdeep.org (the navajo water project)

Stay safe + stay tuned for updates.

Seeing your important work on the landscape elevates and celebrates the dignity and strength of the Navajo Nation.
